Yesterday the newspaper Berria compiled a report with testimonies from several witnesses who gathered under the title The party that blackened the dossiers. In 1994, yesterday, 18 September, marked a milestone in the history of Nafarroa Oinez, “but not because of the celebrations or the impulse to Euskera, but because of the unrest and police violence,” says Berria.
“At first, we were all thrilled. We decided to advance the Nafarroa Oinez to September and it went well: time accompanied us, many people came, we prepared a beautiful route and the cultural offer was also spectacular. Unfortunately, we were blackened by the party,” says Joxan Oiz in the interview that the director of the ikastola Labiaga made to Berria that year. The most serious incidents occurred at 19:00 hours, but the director of the ikastola told him that the first sparks had already perceived them before: “The first provocations of the Civil Guard were detected around 13:00. We had concluded all security issues with the Foral Police, so we had no negotiation or relationship with the Civil Guard. However, they decided to enter with three patrols on a crowded road. And that's where the scratch started."
At the barracks, Berria has recalled that the civil guards displayed a large flag of Spain in which they carried their weapons. “There used to be no flags at the Bera barracks, for that day it was purposefully placed.” Some of the young people concentrated on the wedding stroll responded with shouts and whistles against the civil guards and, according to several witnesses, the newspaper states that glasses were also thrown and that a bottle imbued the barracks. “People started to get agitated and I myself went to ask some young people for peace. I asked them not to fall into provocations, and apparently that is where the thing ended."
The Berriak report also includes the words of the then mayor of Bera, Manuel Iriarte: “People were agitated by the entry of Civil Guard vehicles in Nafarroa Oinez. The patrols were moving in the opposite direction through the center of the route. Someone threw a bottle and spoiled the automatic door to the barracks. At that time, one of the police officers shot in the air." According to the news, the mayor attempted to contact the civil guards on the street: “I asked them to act responsibly and calmly so that, seeing the people on the road, the situation could turn into a disaster.” They had been explicitly asked not to bring any more police, but by then nearly 30 patrols were headed from the headquarters of Tafalla, Pamplona and Intxaurrondo to Bera. Yesterday’s article also collected more words from Iriarte: “Around 19:00 hours I was called by the police: The Civil Guard was throwing tear gas at people."
The civilian guards threw rubber balls and numerous smoke pots, and some threw themselves into the river and others threw themselves into the open and threw themselves on the mountain, according to the same sources. The newspaper explains that some citizens placed barricades and threw stones, bottles and other objects. ‘The controversy was already very harsh’, Iriarte recalled in Berria and, seeing the situation, he contacted the head of the Civil Guard’s headquarters, Colonel Moreno. “He told me that there were too many corners rolled around me, and I told him that he could only stop the incidents.”
Finally, the atmosphere was calm at 22:30 hours, and patrols retired half an hour later. As a result of the incidents, another 50 people were injured in various ways. The following day, the delegation of the Spanish Government joined the version of the Civil Guard, as well as the President of Navarra, Juan Cruz Alli. The fact that the official version was the most prominent caused "enormous damage" to the ikastola. In the words of Oiz, “the ikastola Labiaga became a beaten and defeated college. Relations with other educational institutions and with the administration have worsened’.
