Most antidepressants on the market are intended to increase the level of serotonin, but further research concludes that it is not a lack of serotonin that causes depression. According to Quo de El Diario, for many years psychiatrists around the world have believed that depression is due to a “chemical imbalance”.
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development pointed out in 2019 that between 2000 and 2017, the consumption of antidepressants doubled among the countries that make up the organization, where Euskal Herria is located.
Half of presumption
So far there has been a lack of serotonin, a problem of presumably depressive people. Therefore, the solution has been to give a pill to raise the level of serotonin. The problem is that it has been shown that that belief is not true.
The principal investigator was Joanna Moncrieff, Professor of Psychiatry at University College London and Psychiatrist at the NHS Foundation Trust (NELTF) North East London. It ensures that serotonin irregularity is not the cause of depression, nor its lower level or the decrease in formation.
In addition, it should be noted that antidepressants cause side effects such as decreased libido, dysfunction of anorgasmia and erection, akathasia – inactivity disorder, increased risk of osteoporosis and bone fracture, increased risk of glaucoma and coronary heart disease, among others.
