There are not a few wastes that the sea carries to the coast, but they come from the rivers to the sea as a result of the action and indifference of human beings, which often returns us with the same indifference. The issue of waste deposited in the oceans has become a problem of great environmental impact, but it is only the tip of the iceberg of a greater structural problem that today's society has.
This Sunday, May 29, at 9:00 pm in the chapel of San Sebastian de Elorriaga, the Geoparque organizes annually an auzolan to clean the coast of these wastes and carry out an "awareness" task to the citizens. A bus will depart from Deba at 8:30 and from Zumaia the group will walk out with a guide. From there they will descend to the biotope of Zumaia-Deba, on cliffs, or rather, in the reception area, which is a geological structure, the rocky environment bathed by the sea is called the reception area, where plastics and other accumulated waste are collected.
As explained by those responsible for Geoparque, the objective is to "raise public awareness of the environmental value of this environment" and "actively participate" through resident work. To participate in the cleaning it is convenient to register beforehand.
Colloquium on marine waste
The initiative is part of the European Geoparks Week. Since 19 May, a comprehensive programme has been under way to publicise this natural environment of the Basque coast: film screenings, meetings, guided tours, tertulias, etc.
The last event, which will take place on Thursday 2 June on the terrace of the beach in Itzurun, has organised a colloquium with the participation of experts in the problem of marine waste.
