The work of the port of Mutriku was initiated in 2004 by the Basque Government and, after several years of paralysis following the suspension of the work, it plans to restart it in September of this year. That is why a group of citizens has created a movement to combat the renewal of the port. A rally was held on 28 August under the slogan “Say yes or no, referendum now!”.
The project notes that almost twenty years ago many citizens opposed the project, but EUR 20 million was spent which was carried out. The initiative explained that it has recently been known that almost 20 million euros have been allocated to public money and that the work has been awarded to the company FCC Construction. In this sense, the platform has called for a referendum “because the barbarity they want to do can only be united by the citizens”.
The project adds that many citizens are convinced that the drum, the last point towards the sea, will reduce or prohibit the use of the pool and the beach environment. That is why the group calls for the work of prolonging the dyke to be abandoned and for the existing part to be scrapped.
In view of the 100 metre extension project of the Mutriku dam, a referendum was called today at noon, which brought together many people. They complain that this is a tax project that does not respond to the interests of Mutriku’s neighbours. pic.twitter.com/weYMF5WlEb
