There are already eleven workers who died this year due to accidents at work.
- In less than 24 hours the last two deaths have died: on the afternoon of 4 February the eleventh died in Santurtzi, when a crane fell on the Zamakona shipyard. And on 3 February he died in Galdakao, after dropping a piece of the company GHI Industrial Furnaces on him. Trade unions have denounced that job insecurity is at the root of accidents at work.
It is a 60-year-old neighbour of Santurtzi, a neighbour of the Biscayan town of Santurtzi. The big crane he was handling has fallen.
The deceased in Galdakao, at the GHI Industrial Furnaces workplace, was a worker of the company Tecresa, Llodio and was 40 years old. On 4 February, both in Galdakao and Laudio, concentrations were held in the three Basque capitals. LAB denounces the following CIS data: "This company doubled its profits in 2018 and it is unacceptable that economic benefits should be applied above the safety and lives of workers."
Declarations by trade unions
The ELA and LAB unions have shown solidarity and support for the family and have asked the administration to investigate the cases and take responsibility.
ELA states: "Since this information is intolerable, it should be the governments of Vitoria-Gasteiz and Navarra, as well as the different employers, who react to give priority to occupational health and safety in companies and to establish measures against precariousness in the base of occupational accidents and diseases".
LAB: "It is unacceptable that this kind of accident should be repeated over and over again, and that it could be avoided by basic safety measures. We're sick.
At LAB, it is clear that in order to end violence at work, work and a dignified life must be guaranteed, because we have the right to become healthy and alive. We can only realise a new model that brings workers' lives and health above the profits of companies."
