Corrugados Azpeitia has already begun the dismantling of the plant located in the Amue polygon of the Gipuzkoan locality. This has been announced by the Mayor, Nagore Alkorta, in a joint hearing with the chairman of the Committee on Urban Planning, Josu Labaka, and the chairman of the Committee on the Environment, Aitor Bereziartua.
The CL group announced on Monday, through the media, that it would not open the plant in the Amue area, and the mayor of Azpeitia explained that the company that owns the machines, Metals Vela, presented on Monday in the City Hall the record of the start of the dismantling operations. Alkorta has pointed out that the only project that is under way around Corrugados is that of dissolution, and that, according to him, the Basque Government knows: "It is aware, inter alia, that the same environmental conditions for the implementation of dismantling were included in this dossier in its November 2020 report."
The mayor has pointed out that, once the demolition and dismantling of the workers began, Azpeitia enters a "new phase" and believes it is time to look to the future. "We are going to start a process of recovering the land that has been condemned to nothing for almost ten years. The hull will recover land that will be very important for the development of Azpeitia, will promote the rehabilitation of the Marcial Ucin area, will be added to the process of final sealing the landfill of the Arauntza area under environmental conditions, while work will continue on the activation of the steel in Trukutxo".
"No" to exchange option
Referring to the Trukutxo area, the mayor explained that Azpeitia has never given up the industry: "The region of the Urola and Gipuzkoa have a place to start the steel industry in Azpeitia, and it is up to public institutions to promote this project and process". Moreover, the first edile has said that on the subject of Corrugados an attempt has also been made to start the steel industry in Azpeitia, but that "they have not left it". "The Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and the company Cristian Lay have refused to consider the possibility of starting the plant in Trukutxo, a space specially designed for the steel industry by the General Urban Planning Plan and the Partial Territorial Plan."
The mayor of Azpeitia has stated that the municipal government "has put the interests of the Azpeitiars above the partisan interests" and that "since they placed them in the media whirlpool they have always been telling the truth". In addition, he has insisted that the goal of bringing the issue to the media has never been to start the plant. "First of all, without any economic project, there has been public talk of the unique opportunity to launch a plant in an environment that does not meet environmental and legal requirements and we are now losing hundreds of fictional jobs created without any economic project."
In addition, it has denounced that the Azpeitia City Hall has taken care of the "false expectations" that have been generated and has recalled that the Basque Government and the Council of Gipuzkoa "long ago" that did not open in the centre of Corrugados. "Furthermore, they knew that, as we were told at the meeting on March 31, they had nothing written about Corrugados, no economic project, no business plan, no technical study, no environmental impact study. And let whoever says otherwise present a real economic project that sustains the creation of all these jobs, as well as the requirement of environmental conditions".
Alkorta has called, "once again", for respect for the people of Azpeitia and the Azpeitia City Hall so that the debate over recent months is respected: "The Azpeitiarras do not deserve the damage being done to our people," he added. The mayor has stated that Azpeitia is a municipality that looks to the future with "optimism and responsibility", "active, entrepreneur and worker", and that is working to "boost the local economy and give a new impetus to the local economy".
