Without measures to reduce CO2 and fossil fuels, in the first climate summit document
- Following the leak of the first draft of the agreement to be signed by the countries at the Glasgow climate summit, the environmental organisation Greenpeace has put on the table its low level of commitment: No mention is made of measures to reduce CO2 emissions and limit fossil fuels.
Greenpeace has underlined that the demand for so few compromises in the first draft is a bad sign, as they usually start from more ambitious challenges and the negotiations between countries are the ones that dilute the final result.
The first document of the COP26 meeting in Glasgow states that we are in a critical decade of complying with the Paris agreement and urgent action is needed to maintain the 1.5°C warming on Earth, but precisely in order to avoid such warming it is essential to eliminate fossil fuels and the first draft talks about oil, gas, coal and other fossil fuels. Nor is there any reference to the need to reduce CO2 emissions with a high impact on the greenhouse effect.
Moreover, on the eve of the summit, major manufacturers have expressed their intention to increase the production of gas, oil and coal by 2030, the UN has denounced.
