Zubaydah was arrested in Pakistan in 2002 as one of the leaders of al Qaeda. In 2006 he was transferred to the American naval base in Guantánamo, without ever presenting any charges against him. For four years, he was tortured by the CIA with the help of the FBI.
"It is probably a decisive document on torture in the United States, because the drawings give details, as no one else has done," explains lawyer Mark Denbeaux to the EFE. According to the lawyer, the drawings are more powerful than a real image: "Images have lots of details, they're a reflection of more than a moment."
Torture techniques in images
A report containing the drawings has just been published and summarizes what the US authorities have hidden in 40 images. Zubaydah has self-drawn maneuvered under the influence of choking drills or in the coffins that were slowly flooded. They also insulted their culture and their religion. The beard was cut off, or the Corana was immersed in the blood.
Water is a repetitive element. The report explains that in low-temperature rooms, music was placed in large volume and used to cut or tilt breathing. All this with direct blows and sexual violence on the body for hours, days and weeks.
Large and small containment boxes were often used in combination with other techniques. Every five or ten minutes, guards hit the outside of the box with rods or metal items to prevent the detainee from sleeping.
"Perhaps I should apologize for having taught my genitals, but I must show the dirty reality that was happening to the detainees," Zubaydah said in one of the images, where agents are cut into their penis with shaved blades.
