There are absolutely classic ballet shows that fall in love with its beauty; shows of a modern character that surprise you with its novelty and plasticity. But Marie Chouinard's comes into another dimension. The ballet of the Canadian choreographer surprises you, it's unexpected, it's amazing, it's amazing, it's sometimes unpleasant, but it's certainly fascinating.
The Radical Vitality show consists of a series of abstracts from the choreographer’s repertoire over the past 30 years. A repertoire fully dedicated to the followers of the artist, with their most special numbers. To begin with, at the center of the stage is a dancer with a cube and a bottle of water, who drinks water and apparently urine in the cube. From now on we realize that Chouinard is also joking with his work. But in style.
This show was premiered with great success at the 2018 Venice Contemporary Dance Biennale. The 24 dance thumbnails depicting a deep, long creative world. Although the appearance of some of these solo or owners may seem superficial, it is a work that invites reflection. In each of these little pieces of dance, as appealing as the nurseries, the choreographer shows his/her concerns: nature, human relationships, sensuality, sexuality. It reflects everything in a brazen and brazen way, but terribly alive.
In addition to all this, there were moments of great plastic beauty in which Marie Chouinard's choreography shone for its purity and technical balance, as well as for its expressiveness. So, for example, the duo Lascia ch'io pianga let us be boycotted for their sensuality and perfection. Other times we were surprised by their particular ideas. The number of Visages, for example, showed us on a large screen the projection of the face of a black and white dancer, while he does all kinds of gestures that deform his expression. Or the piece Wild goose duet, which reflects a struggle between two dancers, full of crudety and hardness.
In short, a wonderful spectacle that we can enjoy when we are without prejudice and wanting to see something different.
