Lula is appointed president of Brazil
- Luiz Inazio Lula da Silva announces that the country will “rise” again on the “disaster” left by Jair Bolsonaro. In his speech he has promised economic growth, measures against hunger or to turn Brazil into an “environmental power”. It will not be an easy legislature the historic leader of the Workers’ Party, among others, who is in a minority in the congress.
The act of appointing the new president was held in Brasilia, among the great security measures for fear of right-wing attacks. They disorganized the governance of the economy, public funding, aid to companies, entrepreneurs and foreign trade, squandered public banks, delivered national heritage.”
Lula announces that the country will “rebuild” and that it will drive political and economic reconstruction. “Economic growth”, which will be environmentally and socially “sustainable”. He recalls that 33 million people are currently suffering from hunger in Brazil, and in conclusion he has commissioned a new Family Exchange program. "It wouldn't be fair to ask the hungry for patience."
He also said that he wants to turn Brazil into “environmental power”: “No one has the same conditions as Brazil to become an environmental power: we will begin the ecological and energy transition. Our goal is not to take off greenhouse gases and completely stop deforestation in the Amazon. We will live without cutting any tree.”
Difficult governance
Lula will not be easy to deliver. On the one hand, the right and the extreme right prevail in the Brazilian Congress. On the other hand, its electoral and government alliances also include the central and right sectors and people, such as the climate change deniers or neoliberals.
