The purpose of the new mural is to remember the civilian victims of the wars and to declare that they are “welcome in Orotio,” according to Mayor Urtzi Armendariz. “We can’t stop wars, but we can welcome war victims and help them have a decent life, if that’s something that depends on us. In the same way that the Ochanders were welcome in other places at the time, we now want to declare that the refugees will be welcome in our country,” explains Armendariz.
The town was bombed in 1936 and many people were forced to flee. On the 22nd of July, as part of the festivities, every year the victims of the bombing and all the victims are remembered. In this sense, the new mural “is the best tribute we can make in relation to the event in Andikona”, according to Mayor Armendariz.
This year’s event in Andikona will take place today at 1 p.m. on the day of the bombing. A flower offering will be made to the dead of that massacre. Afterwards, the choir and the Band of Otrório will sing some songs and the members of the Andikona Forum will read a text.
Material to work on at school
The City Council is preparing teaching materials on the impact of the civil war and the bombing on Orotio. The idea is to have this material ready for the school year that starts in September and from then on it will be cultivated by the youngsters of the Orotio school. One of the leaders who has been working on this teaching unit will be present at the event on Sunday.
