BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen and the Wintersahll Dea for fueling the climate crisis
- Several environmental groups are faced with Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz car manufacturers, among others. Accused of fuelling the climate crisis, they will be sued demanding that motor vehicles for internal combustion stop building by 2030. They also want to bring the oil tanker Wintershall Dea, who has recently been arrested, to court.
Greenpeace from Germany, the Deutsche Umweltfe association and activists of the Fridays For Future movement have launched the judicial process that is going on. While we are suffering from the damage of the climate crisis and serious damage is expected for the future, ecologists say that car manufacturers are still looking away. They argue that it is fuelling the climate crisis and that it is not legal, as it is opposed to the Paris agreement. Activists are seeking to speed up plans for internal combustion vehicles to cease production and have set the limit by 2030.
“Justice must serve to ensure that big companies do not destroy our resources and the future of our grandchildren and granddaughters,” the ecologists say. It is precisely the legal route that forced Angela Merkel's government to improve climate law in April.

On the other hand, these associations also want to demand the company Wintershall Dea to stop opening new oil and gas deposits by 2026. The company has reported that 80 million tons of greenhouse gases (GHGs) are poured into the air each year worldwide.
