Platform with neighbours against the celebration of the football world cup in Donostia-San Sebastián: "We will not celebrate any Goal against us!"
- The neighborhood platform has criticized that Donostia-San Sebastian is one of the headquarters of the 2030 World Cup, in an edition organized by Morocco, Portugal and Spain. Although they are covered by "empty speeches" such as "placing the city on the world map" and "bringing the first level sports show to the citizens", from the point of view of the tourism industry, the sports macro-events are "huge business opportunities", according to the platform.
The platform has stated that we are dealing with a "new device that will increase the turistification" of Donostia-San Sebastián: “And we can foresee that most of the Donostians will bring us terrible consequences: the worsening of the housing emergency, the growth of tourist activity, the commodification of urban space, the development of unsustainable transport infrastructures and citizen life will be conditioned by securcratic measures.”
As explained, the International Football Federation (FIFA), analysing the candidature of Morocco, Portugal and Spain, published in November 2024 a report stating that the number of accommodation places in Donostia-San Sebastian "will not be enough" to accommodate the number of visitors expected to attract the World Cup: “The organization estimates that hotels, hostels, etc. of San Sebastian will overflow.” As a solution or tranquilizer, it was said that Biarritz or Baiona are close to supporting the overflow of San Sebastian and that in addition, to understand the capacity of the city you have to take into account resources such as the Airbnb.
Bizilagun’s proposal is “to guide Donostia towards tourist growth” and “to put the city model at the centre of the needs of the citizens”: “We appeal to organize and fight against the precarization of tourist tourism in the lives of the Donostiarras. We are not going to celebrate any Goal against us.”
