Bixente Izkierdo was founded in 1895 on the Ziobehere farm in Urruña, a Borderlands family. They were frank brothers in the house. He didn’t go to school and couldn’t read, but he had an innate wisdom that was reflected in his language from a very young age. Whatever they said to him, he knew how to give a rhymed answer, which was, for the most part, insidious. Of course, they were always respectful answers, never falling into cheap lusts with their wives. This ability to speak made him famous in the village and was loved and respected by the Urruños.

It was the Donado, a thin man, who was about 1.75. She wore a traditional outfit: a shirt, trousers, espadrilles and always with a Basque hat on her head. Hanging from his neck to his liver, he carried the parasol in his ankles and a little button full of spirit in his pocket. Unshaved for two or three days and sharp eyes on the face. He was a serious man and a greedy grin. She said she only had one pant, and she said that whenever a sister washed her, she was in bed.

Although they had several cows and orchards in the house, Bixente used to accompany them in the houses of the town in exchange for a few cents or food. That’s why I used to stay in the other houses of the village for lunch, dinner or even sleep. He was half-hargina and even knew how to make walls.

It is said that he also smuggled spirit or liquor through the South. In 1967, at the age of 72, he died.

Pierrot Haltzuet, son of the Arzenia Inn, recognized him as a Tiki, entering the inn. Pierrot was about twelve years old at the time, today he is 84 years old, but with a fast mind and a healthy body.

Remember that Bixente Izkierdo once went home to do a pile of herbs. He used a peach for that. Cumulatively, the master of the house and Izkierdo talked about a coffee. They were talking about the politics of the time. Mr. Haltzuet “has done this and the other. I don’t know what will become of us if they continue like this.” Bixent spoke and replied:“We’ll have to go straight to the mountains and the margins to the middle.”

André Zugasti, 86, a son of Zugasti, tells me the following story: “Once, Izkierdo arrived in the village via Ibardin, a gendarme ALTO! He told her. And Izkierdo replied: moi à pied et vous à moto.”

But, without a doubt, the one who told me the most anecdotes was Mattin Aldako, who was born 77 years ago in Hattinga - also at home. His father, Dionysius, was a friend of Bixente's communion, and he knew the ditxolari very well.

The Blessed One went to their home and Josef, Mattin's brother, said to him: “Good morning, Bixente. You always promenade. And Izkierdo replied, “The rich always walked.”

Bixent had a brother named Antton who died. Once, someone who did not know that Antton was dead asked him about his brother: “Where is Antton? And Izquierdo answered: Antton is there, standing at the gate of heaven.”

Hargina was skilled, no doubt. They say he once made a pig's cabin and forgot to make it violent. Once again, a wall he had made had fallen, and the master said to him when he saw the Blessed One: “You’ve dropped the wall! And he said, “I didn’t do it forever!”

It is said that the parish priest Etxeberri once called him to wipe the walls of the school with fire. Worried about the sums he was going to ask him, he asked:

“Good Lord, will you not break me? And Izkierdo answered, showing me the teeth that were in his mouth: not with my teeth!"

When Ainitzeta was unemployed, a friend said to him that he was thinking of the fishermen who were soon to set sail at the port of Ciboure: But Bixente, don't you have a job? You should be fishing. And Izkierdo replied, “Fall to the water in the first balance.”

Today, as Clément Laurenz's Pettar was walking down the street, some well-known gendarmes came up to him and spoke to him as he walked in front of him. When the gentleman came from beneath, he saw the rhetoric and said to Bixente, thinking that he was being held prisoner: “Oh Bixente, are you going with them now too?And the answer is this: I’d rather be with them than with you. Because the Retora was walking in the enclosures.”

One of Mattin Aldo's father's brothers was named Lorentxo. Someone once said to our dentist: “Did you know Lorentxo? And he answered, "Yes, Lorentxo was conceived before me!"

These and many more are the ones that count in Urruña with Bixente Izkierdoz. Someone should put them all together in a book. In the meantime, and unfortunately, you’ll have to settle for short articles like this one. Bixente Izkierdo has been a character in Urruña, eccentric and much loved, because with his rhymed responses he knew how to awaken and brighten the hearts of Urruños.

Although fifty-one years have passed since his death, his answers and his humor are still very much alive in the collective memory of the Urruños, and I hope that for a long time it will be so.
