Chinese mediator between Russia and Ukraine
- This has been, at least publicly, the main conclusions of the telephone interview between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski.
China presented its peace plan in Moscow last March, and then stated quite clearly that it was not in the short term but in the long term. Now it takes another step, following the long conversation that Zelenski had long wanted, China announces that it will appoint a mediator to act between the two warring countries.
According to Russia would be Li Hui, former Chinese ambassador to Russia, but China has not yet confirmed his appointment. Their work would be to move backwards between the two rivals and those who support them to guide the situation in the long term. The United States has also seen the telephone interview and the work of this mediator well.
In recent weeks China has acted with representatives of countries such as Brazil, France, Germany and the European Union, and following the successful reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia, Ukraine has consolidated itself in Russia. Everything indicates, however, that it would be easier to mediate with these last two countries, among them because Chinese sources point out that these countries decide for themselves, and that Ukraine should look especially at the US before making a decision.
China’s peace plan is based on the withdrawal of sanctions against Moscow, consideration of Russia’s security concerns and the return of territories to pre-invasion situations last year.
For China, the work done to resume diplomatic relations between Arabs Iran and Saudi Arabia has been a sign of strength, and in Ukraine they also see good results. China launched the Global Security Initiative programme in 2014, under the slogan “Security for All, Global, Cooperative and Sustainable”. That is the basis for the peace plan it proposes for Ukraine.
It is said that during Xi Jinping’s second term of office (2017-2022) he has pursued an aggressive international policy and that the negotiations for the next legislature will take on more strength, and that he also intends to regroup many countries that the US and the European Union reject worldwide.
