The commencement of the communiqué says: "Yesterday we heard that we were back in the classrooms through the media. Three hours earlier, our benchmark inspector didn't know either." And also: "The measures to be taken should be agreed with the school management teams. They have not taken our opinion into account and throughout the lockdown they have not convinced us at all."
The management of Ibarrekolanda College states that the Department of Education has made it available to educational centres to ensure health and safety, and that it is beyond their competence: "The Department of Education leaves in the hands of the management team, teachers and management staff the responsibility to ensure the safety and health of students, teachers and workers when they return to the classrooms. We believe that this responsibility is beyond our reach, as we cannot guarantee the organization of all this". He added that the "moral" direction cannot require teachers to return to their classrooms: "It has to be borne in mind that many teachers are particularly sensitive to COVID-19, are at risk or live with people at risk. Our health is endangered, among us there are teachers who have been sick." He adds that they do not have enough cleaners "to be able to carry out continuous disinfection and proper cleaning of the spaces used".
Forcing students to return to classrooms doesn't look good: "In our center we cannot ensure a distance of 1.5 meters between the students in the classrooms, hallways, toilets or patio." They ask if the center will have more teachers to comply with the maximum permanence measure of 15 students in the classrooms: "A maximum of 15 students per classroom is proposed and in our center the number of students is higher than in the classrooms, in high school practically doubles in all groups. Does this measure involve doubling the number of teachers to attend all students in person? ".
In addition, the management has indicated that families may decide not to return to the situation and that in this case care will not be guaranteed for people staying at home.
The Basque Government has decided that 2nd High School students will return on 18 May, but the Ibarrekolanda College has announced that the final school day for students of this level is 19 May. Similarly, it occurs with the 1st of Baccalaureate: The Basque Government has ordered the return to the classrooms on 25 May, and in Ibarrekolanda the last school day is 29 May.
