They are chained with drums to criticise the "lack of action of the Basque Government" in the fight against climate change
- On Wednesday morning, several activists from the collective Sukar Horia have been chained with drums in front of the Basque Government’s headquarters in Bilbao. The choruses written on T-shirts. The Ertzaintza has identified five members of the group, who have remained in pre-trial detention.
The initiative has been carried out by the youth group Sukar Horia, which has the collaboration of EITB. At 10:00 in the morning, two of the four lanes of the road have been cut off on Diego López de Haro Street, opposite the Basque Government. Two people have joined two drums full of cement, and on the sidewalk, the rest of the members have focused behind the banner. The civil disobedience action has been maintained for two hours, until the fire brigade has released the two occupants from the transport drums. In relation to the action, the Ertzaintza has identified five people at different points in the Basque geography.
While the activists were chained, the collective has spread a communiqué through social networks. They claim that "the new normality looks a lot like the old one." They have denounced that large polluting companies have huge profits – the most contagious company in the Spanish state, Endesa, has recalled that in July they will distribute dividends of EUR 1.5 billion among their shareholders – and that they are receiving rescues industries that have had to close their business for a time like airline or automotive. In the meantime, workers have regretted that "there is more and more misery", that evictions are back on track, that food banks are full and that unemployment is not rising.
"In addition, while the gap between rich and poor is widening, the gap between our society and nature is also widening, fuelling the ecological crises of the future. Let us not forget how far we felt the coronavirus when the first cases appeared in China. Perhaps further away from what we feel today the climate crisis," they say.
They have recalled that the coronavirus, although at first it looked far away, has finally reached the Basque Country, and the same will happen with the climate crisis, "unless profound measures are taken against it". They call for the immediate implementation of a just and equitable ecological transition.
"This ecological transition must not only place our society within the ecological limits of the planet, but must also respond to the great social problems that our society has. Massive distribution of wealth to combat poverty. Tackling unemployment requires the reduction of working hours and the strengthening of public services, as is the case with the creation of a public care system. Facing wars and neocolonial trade agreements brought by the globalized market, betting on the relocation of the economy, with special attention to food sovereignty".
In order to claim this change of direction, two lanes of the old Basque Government road in Bilbao have been cut, with two cement drums hooked. They have concluded by claiming that "the crisis is paid by the billionaires and pollutants" and that a fair ecological transition is needed, and have denounced the lack of action by the Basque Government in the fight against climate change.
