Did you know that travel insurance has suspended its obligations in times of COVID-19? Did you know that some of those inside the Transformative Social Economy have left out the needs of people for their pockets?
I will tell you my case, although it is quite common according to the information I have received these days. Those of us who spend time outside Euskal Herria, and especially those who dedicate time to the peasant and indigenous communities, we tend to hire travel insurance: if we get sick, if we stay on trips, if they rob us, if we have some disgust, to be calm, and if we are where we are to not carry with the popular movements... you know, if you go somewhere, maybe you can't help it much.
"Our travel insurance has a clause that compensates for expenses that are not incurred in "cases of infectious diseases that are transmitted immediately after the epidemic or the sudden onset." Has anyone planned this when buying insurance? I don't."
This time I bought it very happy, because for once and thanks to the advice of a friend I found Arç Cooperativa within the Transformative Social Economy. In addition to mobilizing money in the alternative economy, that gave me another peace of mind.
However, COVID-19 has shown us that our travel insurance has a clause that “in cases of epidemics or infectious diseases that are passed on suddenly” does not compensate for the costs they do not have. Has anyone planned this when buying insurance? I don't -- it'll be my fault! Someone will think that we are in the pandemic and not in the epidemic, for the World Health Organization are two different things, but not for insurance companies.
The insurance itself belongs to the insurance company MwAssistance https://www.europ-assistance.es/sobre-nosotros/quienes-somos. Following the complaints made, I have been uncertain in all cases conditioned by COVID-19. Some trips were cancelled in Brazil (where many trips are still being made because the quarantine is very flexible) and the insurer told me that I would not be paid for the damage, as it is due to the cononavirus. So I started my alert and it occurred to me to ask other questions: I can't leave Argentina and that's going to lead to new visa fees, because it's the fault of the pandemic, insurance won't pay me. I have been told that, even if I get sick, the answer will be the same.
We know that the job of insurance is not to try to pay for it, so despite the fact that in November I have insurance purchased for the whole year, I have been left uninsured since March. In fact, the answer to all the cases and questions raised was this clause.
"Will we ever be able to place this type of insurance within the Transforming Social Economy? In my humble opinion, not at least as they put their portfolio above our health."
The case is even more serious, as I bought insurance through Arç Cooperativa (insurance brokerage) in the Transformative Social Economy area. Their answer was that they would help me mediate with the insurance company and that it was not necessary for the case to be made public, as they always prioritize people. The last news I received was that I asked for the response that sent me 250Assistance, and then no more, it's already been a month. Earlier I asked them to give me back the money (I paid €745) and the answer was in this case silence; attempts to negotiate were also suspended because they told me that the liability was of the insurance company. I have decided to make the case public because it is or will be the case for others.
With the existence of this clause, I have some questions... Will they continue to sell travel insurance? Will our money remain in the situation we are in and in the next? What is travel insurance now for? My advice is that at the moment you do not take out travel insurance (although I have thought otherwise so far)... And my doubt: Will we ever be able to place this type of insurance within the Transforming Social Economy? In my humble opinion, not at least while putting your portfolio above our health.
