The Navarro Institute of Memory, in collaboration with the technical team of the Society of Sciences Aranzadi, recovered on 20 June the remains of two people buried in the cemetery of Gazteluberri. According to the testimonies collected in the locality, in 1944 they were killed in the same place, both members of the anti-Francoist guerrilla, known as Maki. Along with the corpses have been found remains of a shirt, a pen and other garments that have been found.
This is the first search work carried out by the Instituto Navarro de la Memoria in the framework of the 2020 Exhumation Program. The investigations initiated between January and February in Monreal, Esain, Sorauren and the Sierra del Lamento had to be suspended coinciding with the implementation of the state of alarm. However, thanks to the current situation, search work has resumed in Ibero, Yurre and Bidaurreta. At the moment, no corpse has been found inside any of the municipalities.
That of 20 June has been the first successful survey that has enabled the recovery of the two bodies, which have been buried. The exhumation work, begun last Friday, has already been carried out.
In the coming months, the Institute has announced its intention to continue research at different locations following the plan approved at the beginning of the year. At the same time, the Institute began a process of memory of the movement that gave rise to the struggle against Franco, with several interviews.
