57.3% of women aged 16 years or older residing in the Spanish State have ever experienced gender-based violence. Within these forms of violence, physical and sexual violence has been taken into account, both within and outside the partner, including sexual harassment or permanent harassment.
This means that 11.7 million women have suffered this type of violence, according to the Macrosurvey of Violence against Women prepared by the Government Delegation in the Basque Country. The Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, has denounced that the number of violence against women in the Basque Country is "abatible". "One in two women has suffered some kind of male violence, more than 11 million, because they are women," she stressed.
Montero warned this Thursday in the presentation of the Social Situation survey that it is the "wildest symbol". This survey is conducted every four years and, according to their calculations, is based on interviews conducted with a representative sample of 9,568 women over 16 years of age residing in the Spanish State since approximately 1999.
4.38 million women have experienced physical violence (21.5%) and 2.8 million have experienced sexual violence (13.7%) at some point in their lives. According to the survey, 6.5 per cent of women have suffered sexual violence outside the sphere of the partner, 2.2 per cent have been raped, 13.4 per cent have been victims of physical violence and 40.4 per cent have ever been victims of sexual harassment.
As for the partner, almost three million women (14.2%) have suffered physical or sexual violence in the context of the relationship and 31.9% have suffered psychological violence.
In total, 1,678 959 minors currently live in households where the partner suffers physical or sexual violence, emotional or economic control, as well as some kind of kidnapping or intimidation. Specifically, according to the survey, most of these minors, 1,650.095, live in households with psychological violence, where the minor has a prevalence of income. In addition, a total of 265,860 minors live in households of couples who are victims of physical or sexual violence. Of these, 51.7% stated that their sons and daughters suffered violence from the aggressor person.
