"For a few years we have at home the BetiON service of the Basque Government, aimed at the 88 year old mother. At first he was put on a collar, but a router device was also installed at home to press the red button of this device in case of an emergency.
The weekend before Holy Week seemed to us that the mother was beginning to get tired more than usual and we were watching her evolve. On Tuesday, April 12, when we gave her the snack and took her to the lounge (17:15), because she was breathing fast, I took advantage of the button.
They told me that they would take me with a doctor and, without delay, a voice. "Can you tell me a little about what happens to you?" Then I asked him if there were no Basque doctors and he told me that I would have to wait and that they would call me on the phone. He hung us up. They spent several minutes waiting for the call, and I started to feel restless to see that my mother was breathing more and more and not calling me. I called again and told them to send me an ambulance or a person as soon as possible, as it seemed that it was going to get worse.
I told the BetiON employee what happened and he told me, without any modesty: Is Tantte hard to speak in Spanish? ". At first I didn't understand what I was saying, but when I reacted, I said: What...? What are you saying?
And then the worker said to me, You're speaking the language ahead of your mother's health. I told him that I thought it was terrible what I had been told, that I would write to the press and give him his name. But an ambulance to say goodbye, as soon as possible! They hung me back, and I was stunned.
I didn't know what I had to do, they would call again... And in the end, after trying to reassure my mother a little bit, I decided to call SOS Deiak. During the call, the betiON apparatus was activated.
They told me to explain the situation and I told them that the ambulance had arrived. Thus, communication was terminated. Fortunately, an ambulance arrived soon and the mother was taken to Mendaro hospital.
It is regrettable that by asking for such a service in Basque he had to listen to the moralist reprimands of a worker from the Basque Government. The problem is not that I have requested the service in Euskera, but that betiON does not have a Basque doctor prepared, as a Spanish doctor has.
If we had used the service in Spanish, which we have paid every month, we would have been treated right away. But to ask in Basque, we had to wait (with all that this entails in such a situation), and I even had to endure the moralistic reprimands of a worker.
These kinds of things make you feel really bad and make you think you haven't done well and you have doubts that you've neglected your mother's health. And that's just one example of what we Basques experience every day. Always second.
It is enough that the linguistic rights of Euskaldunes are not guaranteed in the Basque Country, and they also make us feel bad about claiming rights. All I have left is to denounce it at the Observatory and on Twitter, but the bad time that nobody has passed me takes it away from me. #BetiTXAR
Odriozola yesterday mentioned the Twitter account @BetionEJGV in this same thread, but there is no answer from that account. Since 2019 it seems to be a thing of the mouths that are paralyzed.
