The Directorate of Penitentiary Institutions of Spain has announced the transfer of eight Basque political prisoners to prisons in the Autonomous Community. In this regard, they have pointed out that seven of them have been transfers by mutual agreement with the Basque Government. Five of the eight detainees will be transferred to prisons in Martutene, Zaballa or Basauri, and the other three will be transferred to Pamplona/Iruña.
Juan Luis Agirre will be transferred from Soria prison. He was arrested in August 2002 and served three-quarters of his sentence in March 2020, so he could be on probation. Ivan Apaolaza, for his part, will be taken to the prison in Logroño for release. Admitted to prison in 2008, he will serve three quarters of the sentence in 2033.
Alvaro Arri was arrested in 2003 and is currently in prison in Burgos, where he has been admitted to prison. He served three-quarters of his sentence in 2018. Mikel Azurmendi Peñagarikano was arrested in 1998 and will be transferred to Dueso prison, where he is admitted. In the case of these four, it has not yet been determined whether they will be transferred to Zaballa, Martutene or Basauri prison. Txetxu Barrios will be transferred from Zuera prison to Pamplona/Iruña prison. He served three-quarters of his sentence in 2020.
On the other hand, Gari Arruarte, Jon González and Idoia Mendizabal will be transferred from Pamplona prison to CAV prisons. Arruarte was arrested in 2003 and served three-quarters of his sentence in 2018; González has been in prison since 2011 and will serve three-quarters of his sentence in 2030; Mendizabal was arrested in 2010 and will serve three-quarters of his sentence in 2030.
