Real threats... and real opportunities
The following infographic is based on the report number 55 of the Delàs Peace Research Center of Catalonia, published in October 2022. In the report, Xavier Bohigas, Pere Brunet, Teresa de Fortuny, Anna Montull García and Pere Ortega analysed in depth the links between transnational corporations, belligerence and the climate emergency. And sixteen months later, we can say that these links have only increased.
Among the conclusions, the authors point out that, in the context of the climate emergency and the migratory crisis, a large network of interests and power balloons has been created in the world, led by a few private actors that go beyond countries. This global network links military business with fossil raw material business and directly affects environmental crises, especially in the Global South.
With a view to the future, they envisage an increase in military spending and an increase in conflicts between the powers, in order to deal with the "threats" that the economies of these powers will suffer.
But as the infographic rightly explains, the threats are not those that tell us, but those generated by “the elites that promote the arms race and armed conflicts.” Thus, other priorities and other geopolitics are needed, and to do so, “the mobilization of civil society is the only hope for eco-feminist solutions and collective actions”.
