Fascist, xenophobic or homophobic attacks are also on the rise in the Basque Country, and concern has spread here and there. The Bajo Bidasoa belongs to the areas affected by these attacks, where, specifically, most of the attacks and/or actions are carried out by the group called Devenir Europeo (Evolution of Europe)
The actions of the attacking groups are obviously obscure, and “although it is difficult to gather detailed information, it is known that more than a dozen attacks have been carried out by the aforementioned group.” These are the words of the collective reflection group Bor-bor de Irún. In his letter this Wednesday, he refers to the attacks allegedly carried out by the neo-Nazi group Devenir Europeo in the region of Bajo Bidasoa: Nazi paintings, massive sticker adhesions in different neighborhoods, and the adhesion of posters with crystals that were intended to cause pain, among others.
At Christmas, on the other hand, the group took a leap and attacked with small explosives the Lakaxita youth center and the space occupied by the Socialist Movement in Moscow Square. Bor-borr says that “individuals have also been threatened with painting in their homes” and they suspect that they have also committed the racist attack against a fruit farm in the San Miguel neighborhood.
The attacks are not limited to Irun. On December 20, it was discovered that some fascist group had attacked Agiña’s memorial. The commemoration commemorates the captives of the “workers’ battalions” who worked as slaves on the road that connects Lesaka with Vizcaya.
Also in early January, El Salto https://www.elsaltodiario.com/racismo/navidades-agresiones-fascistas-euskal-herria reported on several other fascist attacks during Christmas in Arrigorraga, Biarritz and Bayonne.
What is Devenir Europeo?
Devenir Europeo (DE) is a “cultural association” led by the well-known writer of the extreme right, Ramon Bau, who, as you can read on his website, considers himself a national socialist. The group believes that Europe is in a state of red decadence due, among other things, to immigration, and to return to the situation they proclaim without a word the return of Nazism. Previously, Bau was a member of the Falangist group CECADE, which was founded in Barcelona in 1966 and disappeared in 1996.
According to the collective Bor-bor, “DE is adapting the discourse, sewing international Nazi alliances and creating new local cells. In recognition of what is happening in Txingudi, we must acknowledge with responsibility that they have made progress and apparently are also succeeding in seducing several young people.” It also has a section of the Basque Country where it is specified that it held some 30 events until 2017. Most of them are private lectures and their attendance requires the permission of the association’s management. They also have their own channel on the social network Telegram. https://t.me/s/acdevenireuropeo
Foreign Relations of Spain
Last December, Isabel Peralta, leader of the DE, attended a congress of the far-right Nordic Resistance group of the same name in Sweden. Peralta has stood out on several occasions in public events and, in particular, in the mobilizations of the Spanish right against the PSOE in Calle Ferraz in the occasion of the pardons of Proces. He was born in Madrid and has Navarrese parents.
The newspaper Público reported on the conference and compiled Peralta’s comments at the conference: “The words that define me are loyalty and fanaticism. I am only a soldier of the noblest cause that exists: the survival of my race and the struggle for its existence. (...) Many believe that National Socialism is dead, that it fell under the ruins of Berlin. But that was not the end, but the beginning of the greatest creation the world will ever see.”
What to do in front of them?
The Bor-bor collective recognizes that it has more questions than answers: “Do we understand enough to fight? Which ones are they? Why have they managed to form a permanent cell with Nazi ideology among us? How are they so active and aggressive? What and what exactly do they have at the jo-limit? How to deal with their poisonous speech and violent practice?”
They don’t have a clear answer, but they do have the method to look for the answer, “that’s why in the coming weeks we’ve committed to addressing the issue and opening training places to nurture anti-fascism in Txingudi.” You can read the full article published by the collective in the local media Nueva Angula. And in February and March you can see the talks related to the extreme right below.
