A few days ago, I heard an interview from EITB's director, I felt pain in my heart. Ilmo. Mr. Director of Basque Radio Television in office and with sufficient dedication to the Basque country. I think it is very significant to measure the current priority of Basque in the audiovisual media.

I was happy when I heard a politician two weeks ago that the Basque is what makes us Basques. However, it occurred to me right away that I would have to start clarifying his thesis at home.

EITB has just turned 40. We have seen the celebration and the doubts about it: a group of well-known workers in the house who have been very prestigious, of reference, complain on the networks because of the tone that the celebration has had. My doubt is whether only celebration is the cause of these irritations. Let each one do the interpretation.

I remember that for those of my generation the referent was the Basque television channel of ETB, television and this channel were synonyms. We found it unthinkable to see the cartoons or the series in Spanish, and if it touched us, it was absolutely strange to us. Today I am aware that the reality is different among young people, but I have often been given the priority that almost needs to be given to the subject we are giving, so that future generations will have enough Basque referents. I can be wrong, but according to what I read and I see there seems to be fewer and fewer reference films, series, cartoons... in the Basque country. At present, should it not be the other way around? At present, given the broad offer we have, should not our public chain give more content, more up-to-date and quality for young people to consume in Basque?

When EITB began to take its first steps, one of the objectives was, besides being a public chain of all, to disseminate the knowledge and use of the Basque Country. Today, I am not sure that the step is going forward or going backwards. After 40 years, I think we should start taking steps to give real priority to the chain in Euskera. I would say that more resources and more importance are offered to the Basque chain in Spanish. And that on behalf of the audience? There may be other causes. Can you imagine the same situation in Catalonia? Impossible, as there the local chain is totally in Catalan. It also seems that it is still a local reference chain, even if it is entirely in Catalan. Although I would have to say that, or perhaps that is the real reason? They say there's nothing to learn from.

In addition to experts and linguists, many young people seem to be concerned about the situation of the use of our language. An example of this is the newly created Gazte Euskaltzaleen Sarea initiative. And the demonstration just held in Donostia, supported by eleven agents of Basque cultural activity. Let us see and learn, therefore, to begin to meet the needs, before late.
