Platform against BBVA and EH Planto al Capital! The protest has been called by the campaign members, who have participated in it. This initiative is carried out annually since 2008. With red paint, many of the activities of this bank are intended to represent the serious consequences that they have on many people and groups.
The spokesmen of both platforms have assured that the reasons for which they began to protest before the BBVA Shareholders' Board remain fully in force twelve years ago. Among the following causes, they reported:
On the one hand, BBVA is the leader of the Spanish banking industry in investments in the arms industry. Over the past five years, it has earmarked EUR 2,678 million for the financing of companies such as Maxam, General Dynamics, Airbus or Boeing, among others. These companies produce various types of weapons used in numerous wars, causing the death and forced relocation of millions of people around the world.
On the other hand, they have denounced that, despite the fact that they have secured more than EUR 13 billion from the bank bailout, this institution continues to evict hundreds of families each year, despite the fact that, as they have denced, it has paralysed this practice.
In addition, "it is part of the banking lobby that presses to deepen the privatisation of pensions", to the detriment of the public model that defends the absolute majority of retired people.
Finally, they have denounced that this bank continues to finance macro-projects with serious environmental and social impacts around the world. They mention the following: The mega-project of Hidroituán in Colombia, which has displaced 13,000 people and which has led to the murder of seven anti-dams activists; and the construction of the Isilu dam, located in Turkish Kurdistan, which is causing serious environmental, social and cultural impacts that calcinate the area’s neighbours.
In addition to the harmful activities that give rise to the bank's profits, entrepreneurs wanted to denounce the "favourable treatment" granted to it by the Basque Government and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia. By reducing corporation tax or by signing agreements favourable to the bank. "This is the case of the rescue of the BBVA Tower in Bilbao, which for years has been in disuse and is channeled with public funds."
