The Government of Navarra will not fund public funding for centres that differentiate students from baccalaureate by sex
- Students are disaggregated by sex at Irabia–Izaga and Miravalles-Redin schools in Opus Dei, in violation of the funding pact. Since the Department of Education notified the segregation in September, and dismissed the allegations submitted by both centers, the Government of Navarra decided not to extend the concert in the course of 2023-2024. The decision will affect the Baccalaureate cycles, as both parties have signed a phase-out agreement for segregation in the FP and ESO cycles.
On Monday the Government of Navarra informed the Irabia, Izaga and Miravalles-Redin centres of the suspension of the financing agreement for non-compliance with their conditions. In fact, both centers differentiate students by sex, which does not comply with the pact. Both centres belong to Opus Dei.
Since September 2022, it was known that both centers maintained gender differentiation. The inspection service of the Department of Education reported that LOMLOE was not being implemented in relation to Baccalaureate. The Spanish education law states that the centers that apply sex discrimination to students cannot receive public money. Both Irabia Izaga and Miravalles-Redin have submitted allegations to the complaint made by the Department of Education, delaying the process of suspending concerts for a full course. Dismissed the claims, 30 January accounts for the suspension agreement, which will be reflected in practice from 31 August 2023. That is, it will affect the course 2023-2024.
The Government ' s decision does not affect all educational cycles and will only be applied in the Baccalaureate. In fact, for VET and ESO cycles, schools and government have signed an agreement to phase out segregation. Since the first FP course, schools have committed to mix "progressively" students: last year they began to break the segregation with 1st students, this year 1st and 2nd students have not disaggregated by sex and it is expected that in the coming courses the measure against segregation will be applied more and more. The Department of Education sets the deadline for eliminating gender discrimination as 2026-2027.
However, in the Baccalaureate there is no room for commitments by levels, and according to the LOMLOE in the Baccalaureate there is no such distinction. In that case, the Government will not extend the pact in that cycle.
