Directors of the two hospitals in Bilbao have been surprised with the COVID-19 vaccine and have had to resign
- The managing director of the hospitals of Basurto and Santa Marina of Bilbao, Eduardo Maiza, and Dr. José Luis Sabas have resigned this Wednesday at noon, according to Osakidetza. The day before, the ELA union reported that several officials at the Basurto hospital were taking the COVID-19 vaccine, exercising the power conferred on them by their position. Both Maiz and Sabas are members of the PNV and have a broad political trajectory in the Basque Government and in the City Hall of Bilbao. It is not ruled out that more hospital authorities have been vaccinated in an authoritarian manner.
Although not included in the protocols established by Osakidetza, the directors of the hospitals of Basurto and Santa Marina, Eduardo Maiz and José Luis Sabas, were integrated and reached by the health workers.
The ELA trade union reported in the newspaper El Correo that in the Anesthesia Service of the Hospital de Basurto there was a great discomfort among the workers, as several middle-level authorities were vaccinating against COVID-19 by skipping the protocols. The Correo has added the excuse they have used to do this: the doses were "leftover" and they wanted to "not waste them".
At noon on Wednesday, Osakidetza announced the resignation of both managers for "breach of the vaccination protocol against Covid-19". In the press, Maiz has filtered an e-mail to his colleagues in Basurto, in which he has apologized "if he has been wrong in any way".
The Health Advisor, Gotzone Sagardui, appeared this Wednesday afternoon in the Health Committee of the Basque Parliament to discuss the evolution of the pandemic and in her explanations on these cases of corruption will be one of the main focuses of the day.
