A prisoner of eta has died in Basauri prison (Bizkaia). He's been found dead in his cell. There is no official confirmation and no data have been provided on the identity of the deceased prisoner. For his part, Salhaketa has asked the Basque Government to give explanations and to investigate the death of the worker. Subsequently, the Basque Government has indicated that, in view of the results of the autopsy, there are indications of suicide.
Since the Basque Government assumed prison jurisdiction in October 2021, a total of seven prisoners have died in Basauri, Martutene and Zaballa. Salhaketa has requested a meeting with the new Justice Minister of the Basque Government, María Jesús San José, for parliamentary procedure.
The association has pointed out that three-quarters of prisoners suffer from mental illness and that cooperation between prisoners, officials and third-sector associations must be encouraged to deal with the mental health problem. It has called on the Basque Government to implement "more quickly" the protocols against suicides, because it is doubtful that today it will be done as soon as necessary.
