The 84-year-old woman was murdered by her son on 3 January at her home in Bilbao. Several sources have indicated that the man died as a result of his neck injuries. On Tuesday afternoon, concentrations will be held in Barakaldo and in the four capitals of Euskal Herria.
Last Friday, his son murdered his mother at his home from Arrandi Street in Barakaldo (Bizkaia). The man was arrested on the same day on charges of murder, by decision of Barakaldo's guard judge. The defendant appeared on Sunday morning at Instruction Court No. 1 in Madrid and is still detained. The Ertzaintza has opened an investigation to try to clarify the causes of the event.
At 16:30 a.m. on Friday, residents of the town of Biscay gave the warning to the Ertzaintza after hearing screams and discussions. However, before the police approached the site, the woman had already died and the body showed signs of violence. Although the woman had never filed a complaint against the child, the Basque Department of Security has reported that the man had a history of gender-based violence.
On Saturday dozens of people concentrated in Barakaldo to denounce the machista murder that has taken place in the Vizcain town. In addition, there have been several demonstrations organized by Itaia for this weekend. This Tuesday, for its part, the World March of Women of Euskal Herria has called mobilizations in Barakaldo, Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Donostia-San Sebastián and Pamplona/Iruña.
In Barakaldo, the mobilization was called in Plaza Bide Onera at 18:30; in Donostia-San Sebastián, at 19:00 on the Boulevard; in Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz, at 19:30 in the Arriaga Theater and in the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca; and in Pamplona, at 20:00 on the Plaza del Virgen Blanca.
The first of the murders in Euskal Herria was that of Barakaldo, where in 2024 six women died of male violence. There are 125 women who have lost their lives since 2003.
