Baiona will offer from September a university diploma in journalism in Basque
- Due to the difficulty of finding professional journalists in Euskera, the media team of the territory was formed, from which the project arises. The studies will last for two years and the pupils will pursue media internships.
In Baiona, university journalism studies will be held in Basque from September. The Institute of Journalism Bordele-Aquitaine (IJBA), Afdas and the Public Organization of the Basque Country (EEP), Paue and the University of Aturrialde (UPPA), together with the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the University of Bordeaux (EHU) have signed a Collaboration Diploma.
Given the difficulty of the Basque media to find journalism professionals, the EEP created a working group that brings together the media of the territory. He pointed out that the media are "strategic actors in the dissemination of a language" and that media content in Basque is "essential" for linguistic promotion. Thus, the new diploma aims to "offer training to a new generation of Basque journalists, strengthen the journalistic work in Basque and enable the development of the Basque language in the digital sphere".
Media practices
The studies will last two years and students will practice in a communication medium. Specifically, they will stay for two weeks at the University and six weeks at the company. The PSE will grant 8,000 euros to the media that will host trainees and university training will be funded by Afdas. Ten media have already appeared.
In principle, a minimum of 10 pupils and a maximum of 15 participants will participate in each promotion. It will be necessary to have level B2 in Basque and all subjects will be in Basque, most in Baiona, but some also in Bordeaux and Leioa.
