The four pelotaris of the Baiko region, Iñaki Artola, Jon Ander Peña, BEÑAT Urretabizkaia and Jon Erasun, have joined the list of chosen for the tournament. The first three have been present at the press conference and Erasun has not been able to attend the event, as it is confined by COVID-19.
Since Asegarce became Baiko at the end of 2018, and after the appointment of José Ramón Garai as the new CEO, the pelotaris have explained that they began to suffer “previously lived or unknown situations”. Among other things, they pointed out that training did not take into account the personal situation of pelotaris. On the other hand, they have explained that they force young Pelotaris with pre-contracts to go to Bilbao or Beasain "three times a week", "without any guarantee of the future" and "without a living wage". The Pelotaris have described as "very difficult" the talks they had with José Ramón Garay when renewing their contracts, in which there have been "obvious disrespect". Moreover, they have denounced that the contract is not renewed to Eskiroz and Victor: “It has been a revenge of the company for everything that happened in the negotiation to leave the ERTE”.
The pelotaris have made several requests to the company. On the one hand, the Director-General, José Ramón Garai, “should change his attitude”: “Greater communication with workers, willingness to negotiate and changes in the treatment of sports and personal”. Furthermore, they have given ‘unconditional support’ to those members who have not been renewed ‘in an absolutely unfair manner’. He has also asked the company to “rethink some of the decisions made in recent times”. In this regard, they have warned that if demands are "spared" and continue to receive "the same treatment", they will have to adopt "stricter measures" and the possibility of mobilisation.
Moreover, in the face of this situation, they have announced that they will create an association of professional pelotaris to "protect the present pelotaris and those who come in the coming years".
