Tomorrow afternoon begins the Zinebi festival, which is sixty years old and will be held at the Euskalduna Palace. The opening ceremony will take place at the Arriaga Theatre in Bilbao and it will pay tribute to the Argentine filmmaker Mariano Llinos, recognizing "his aesthetic radicality for creation".
You will be given the Gold Medal Honor Mikelato at the event. Llinos will also present her new work, La Flor, a 14-hour film that will be screened for three consecutive days at Azkuna ZENTROA from 11 to 13 November at 5 p.m. At the closing gala, a second Mikelazo de Honor will be offered to the Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul. His “ability to conjugate reality and fantasy naturally” will be honoured.
A total of 3,770 works from 124 countries, of which 52 have been selected by the jury, submitted their application for the Zinebi Official Prize. Six are Basque productions and a full film in Basque; that is the Azken otsoa short film by Iker Maguregi. These are the jobs that will be competing and that have taken place among us: The Cadoul of cracium by Bodgar Muresanu; Ancora lucciole by María Elorza; Love always by Maider Fernández; Il dolce far by Richard Sahagún; and It is All Right Here by Teresa Sendagorta. In total you will see 22 fictional films, 11 animated films and 18 documentaries.
This year the international competition ZIFF Zinebi First Film will also be held for the third time: an international competition dedicated to the premium opera. Five films will compete with each other, including the following: Fausto (Canada, 2018) by Andrea Bussman and Casanovagen (Germany, 2018) by Lousie Donschen.
