So far this year, at least 32 women have been murdered by their partners or ex-partners throughout the Spanish state. The majority of the murders occurred in the summer months: nineteen, 59.38 per cent of the murders. Earlier, the Machistan killings have warned on several occasions that they rise in the summer: Since 2003, July and June have been the months in which there has been a greater number of Machistan murders.

On the other hand, this summer it has also been noted that among the men who have murdered their partners or ex-partners there are, as usual, police officers and former police officers. Of the nineteen murders in which at least three were Machian murders, the murderers are people who have been police or policemen. Therefore, in 15.75% of cases.

Same percentage as the previous summer. In fact, in the summer of 2023 there were already nineteen Machian murders perpetrated by police or ex-police; that is, in 15.75% of cases. However, these three killings were not the only ones committed last year by the police or those who were policemen: in total there were four throughout the year, as in May there was another case.

In each case

There is no concrete data on the actual number of policemen or former policemen killed by their partners or ex-partners. This information is kept secret. However, as has been said, it is known that at least seven cases have occurred in the Spanish State in less than two years: From the beginning of 2023 until the end of August 2024.

The last recorded case took place on 20 August this year. On that day, a former National Police officer shot two women in Barcelona, in the centre of Barcelona. The murder of his former partner and current boyfriend took place in the localities of Rubí and Castellbisbal, where he was arrested for murder. Women, aged 61 and 64, have been transferred to the Basurto Hospital. The murderer retired in January 2023 and became the first head of the National Police in Catalonia.

On 18 June, a woman was murdered by her partner in Soto del Real (Madrid), who shot and cut her head. The 66-year-old woman died after an accident. In his day, the murderer was a municipal police officer, but now he is retired.

Such attacks, as has been said, were at least four in 2023. Last May, a man, who was a civil guard, murdered his partner in Granada. The deceased was 39 years old and was a neighbor of the Navarra locality. In June, another 44-year-old woman was killed by her former partner in Oia (Pontevedra) after being sexually assaulted. The aggressor, who had an order away from the woman, was a civil guard.

Last July, a 38-year-old woman was murdered by her partner in the Valencian village of Antella. He had also been a policeman. In addition, at the end of last August, a 58-year-old woman was shot dead by her ex-partner in the Valencian village of Alcira. The alleged murderer, who had previously been an agent of the National Police, was already retired.

Attempted murder by an ertzaina in Donostia-San Sebastián

In addition to the three Machian killings in the summer of 2024, there has also been an attempted murder in Donostia-San Sebastián (Gipuzkoa) by an agent of the Ertzaintza. On 18 August, an ertzaina tried to kill her partner with a knife, according to the Ertzaintza report. The aggression took place in the Donostiarra neighborhood of Txomin, in which his two daughters were also attacked in the Donostiarra neighborhood.
