We are gradually learning about the economic consequences of the containment and coronavirus crisis. The unprecedented decline occurred between April and June, i.e. during closure, in gross domestic product. Compared to the previous year, GDP has fallen by 18.8%.
The state of alarm and the confinement decreed by the Spanish State to deal with the coronavirus have been a major blow to the economy. The Government of Navarre has also been superior to what was expected of it. April was the toughest month. According to estimates by the Navarro Institute of Statistics, this decline has occurred mainly in the service and industry sectors. The containment relief coincided in May with an improvement in the economy, which is being very slow.
In the workplace, of course, the decline in the economy has had an impact. We recently got to know the Labour Force Survey. According to this study, 12,800 people lost their jobs between April and June. In the annual comparison, 22,000 entries have been recorded. In addition to the unemployment figures, the workers in the European Community have to be added. At present, 5,800 cases are active in Navarre and affect some 43,000 workers. Some will continue until September, but the future is not clear to everyone. 13% of Navarre companies plan to reduce their jobs in the coming months, according to data provided by Eustat.
