For twelve years, the Argentine Jorge Mario Bergoglio has presided over the Catholic Church under the pseudonym of Francis I. It came to the surprise of many that Benedict had unexpectedly resigned from office XVI.ak; until then it was normal to elect a new pope once the previous one had expired, not while ignoring the office. Pope Francis became the first pope born outside Europe.

He died at the age of 88 from stroke after suffering serious health problems in recent months. He spent about a month in a hospital in Rome, suffering from pneumonia. The "social commitment" of Pope Francis has been highlighted by various international actors, including European institutions. The two governments of the Southern Basque Country, for example, have established three days of mourning, as the Spanish government has done. "His work for the vulnerable" has been praised. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, for her part, highlighted Francis' "humility and love for the unhappy"; in her opinion, she worked "for a fairer, more peaceful and more compassionate world". Similarly, the high authorities of Russia and Ukraine, as well as those of the United States, and Hamas, for its part, have expressed regret that the pope was "a staunch defender of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people".

In general, Bergoglio has been praised for what he did for the poorest, and that he spoke without a beard mouth, having the most conservative line against him. Among other things, he criticized contemporary capitalism in more than one of its manifestations, because it "feeds poverty", and in this way he considered the intervention of the states in the market to be good, even if he did not manage to direct anyone to it. The Ukrainian flag also appeared once in his hands, as he was committed to leading the peace process. And, above all, his work for the rights of migrants has been praised, among other things, as he took up his post and immediately made his trip to Lanpedusa.
