Text by Getxophoto Commissioner, Jon Uriarte

"The global development of transport and communication technologies has created a fully interconnected and interdependent world. An international scenario with faster and more sustainable interaction between people, communities and public and private authorities. Access to information and great migratory flows have generated a kind of global awareness, on the one hand, bringing cultures closer or establishing new relationships and common objectives, and on the other, showing the growing economic inequalities, ideological prejudices and reactionary policies.

In this new scenario, the traditional notion of sharing technological, social, cultural and environmental phenomena is being updated. The idea of solidarity based on generosity and integration sets the hierarchies between communities. Movements that claim horizontal and respectful ways, based on coexistence and celebrate inequality, are changing this idea of solidarity. In the global climate emergency we are experiencing, the planet’s limited natural resources require a will for co-responsibility and transnational survival. In this complex situation, the liberalization of information on the Internet has led to polarization, focusing the attention of public debates on the limits of freedom of expression and care capitalism. In the context of the individual accumulation of goods and the global pandemic, in a world governed by the fear of derdine, the right, the need and the responsibility to share have become vitally important. And precisely because of that, GETXOPHOTO 2021 will set out to analyze those new meanings that the idea of sharing is acquiring."
