The City Hall of Arrigorriaga sent a note on 11 April, stating that "the attitude of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia in the management of the residence is unacceptable". The Elderly Residence of Arrigorriaga is the responsibility of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia. Although it is not a municipal competence, due to the situation generated by COVID-19, the City Hall is trying to follow closely, as "the data it has collected unofficially are very worrying".
As reported by the City Council in a statement, policy makers have had telephone contacts with the head of the residence. The residence has accepted the offer of aid made by the City Council: "The Personal Protection Teams (PPE) have been sent twice and the workers have been given a housing offer for municipal employees".
But the City Council states that the information received from the nursing home has not been of the same measure: “He has made it clear that he will not provide us with data on the number of patients due to Covid-19 disease, nor on the number of deaths. As he told us earlier, he once again told us that the Provincial Council of Bizkaia owns the data and is the only recipient of it.”
The Town Hall of Arrigorriaga made a request for data to the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and Osakidetza and, in the absence of a reply, Mayor Maite Ibarra referred the formal request back to the Provincial Council.
Ibarra pointed out that "the Provincial Council of Bizkaia only publishes data once a month, unlike the Representatives of Álava and Gipuzkoa, who do so almost every day". The Deputy only provides this information to the Department of Health of the Basque Government, the Prosecutor's Office and the relatives of the deceased."
The City Council has asked the Deputy: "We demand that the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, for the respect of our elders and their families, act responsibly and transparently and intervene on this issue, take urgent steps to ensure that the situation is reoriented in a not too long time."
Here are the statements by the Mayor of Arrigorriaga, Maite Ibarra:
