The scandal of damage caused by the TAV’s works in Lezetxiki continues to give rise to reactions. The Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, Adif and the Basque Government immediately denied when the disaster and the prehistoric site were known on Wednesday, and the archaeologist of the Congressman Mertxe Urteaga, in charge of supervising the works of the TAV, said that the dismissal was "far away".
In the Basque Country Irratia asked the spokesman for the Council of Gipuzkoa, Eider Mendoza, about this issue and he was not able to determine how many meters of the protection zone have been affected, but "in that protected place there is no harm, that is what we have to stress," he said.
However, various parties will ask for explanations, including EH Bildu, Elkarrekin Gipuzkoa and Ezker Anitza IU of Debagoiena. The Garagartza District Commission has also denounced the destruction of a cave gallery, and Ekologistak Martxan stressed that the "serious deterioration" that has been made to the cave is also due to the "scarce" Environmental Impact Study presented by Adif and to the "laziness" of the Basque Government before it.
The municipal government of Arrasate held a meeting on Thursday morning with representatives and experts from various institutions and associations, as well as with the archaeologist and former site director, Alvaro Arrizabalaga. The Municipal Government makes the statement public and reports that it will ask Adif for explanations.
Plans don't match
The City Hall has explained that the TAV tunnel has affected the cascade in the karst area of Lezetxiki and Leibar, but the plans it has in its hands suggest that the route of the railway is "far away" from the karst "and not next door, as in the photos appearing in the media". That’s why you’ll also ask Adif for updated plans.
In addition, he would like to know whether archaeological checks and patrimonial property have been carried out in the affected area and would request a copy of the archaeological report.
The municipal government of Arrasate has recalled that the whole area of Lezetxiki and Leibar is declared as a mountain of archaeological protection in municipal planning and has explained its "alteration and responsibility".
