This month three people have been arrested in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Araba) in connection with a criminal group: they fooled the rental of homes, distorted rooms and censuses that subcontracted, among others. Three people who were part of this network have recently been arrested, and since then the situation of several neighbours who have suffered their fraud has worsened. The Housing Union of Vitoria-Gasteiz, in particular, reports on the situation of the people living on portal No. 4 of Prado Street.
"They still have no contract or registration, threatened with eviction, stacked in homes and no alternative housing," said the members of the Housing Union in a hearing yesterday. Last week, moreover, there was a "hidden shedding of light": the sub-predator of these houses has reduced the contracted tension.
Owners, landlords and responsible institutions
"The Housing Union has pointed out those responsible for this situation." He has put the "owners and landlords" in the spotlight: "they take advantage of the vulnerable situation of many people to get benefits, through extra-legal and illegal means, that is, through threats and coercion, accumulating people in one room, unilaterally modifying the conditions of the rentals, infringing the privacy of the spaces, cutting supplies, etc. ".
They also highlighted the "responsibility of bourgeois institutions". In particular, reference has been made to the City Hall of Vitoria-Gasteiz. "Because of the difficulties that the City itself has in obtaining the Census, several people have to live under the frauds and abuses of the owners," they reported. They also denounce that "instead of protecting the victims of the criminal network, the City Hall has left them more unprotected than before: "not only has it not offered housing alternatives, but it has also not tried to break the abuses of the future".
Demands and mobilization
Along with the Housing Union, the residents of the Prado 4 have fought and claimed three aspects: "The automatic and unconditional suspension of any eviction process against tenants, the immediate replacement of restricted supplies and the census for the affected people".
A call for mobilisation has also been made for this Friday, 31 March. The protest will take place in front of the housing block number 4 of the Prado, from 19:00 hours. At the meeting they will denounce the "impunity of the owners" and the "accomplice role of the institutions".
