On 14 December, the Argentine Senate began discussions on the bill to decriminalize abortion. The draft adopted by the House of Deputies for last Friday, 11 December, goes ahead and the Senate vote is expected on 29 December. The bill provides that abortion is legal and free of charge during the first fourteen weeks of pregnancy of the pregnant woman. I remember that today, abortion is not legal in Argentina, except in two cases: a rape and when the life of the pregnant woman is in danger.

On 11 December, thousands of citizens took to the streets to hold the vote of Members:

The moderator of the debate has been Norma Durango. In the Justice and Criminal Affairs and Health Committees, the three officials explained the details of the rule and began the debate after receiving explanations from a number of hopeful people with positions that were favourable and opposed to the initiative. In Durango's opinion, "in this period there is a possibility of voting on the bill", despite the fact that "there are still doubts". Favourable Members do not want to create false expectations and have recalled the 2018 vote: two years ago the proposal to legalise abortion was approved in the Chamber of Deputies, but the Senate rejected it; 31 senators voted in favour and 38 against. A very tight vote with over 8,000 seats is also expected on this occasion.

Development of the draft law

The project of legalization of abortion allows to interrupt the pregnancy until week 14, while allowing conscientious objection of professionals dissatisfied with this medical practice. The period of week 14 shall not apply when the pregnancy is the result of a violation, in the case of children under 13 years of age or when the life of the woman is in peligro.Si those under 16 years of age choose to abort, the consent of the parents or tutor.Las persons over 16 years of age have full capacity to give their consent for themselves and to interrupt the professional pregnancy will be required.
