On Saturday the person who comes to Biriatura will have the opportunity to buy tree plants for the producers of the local nurseries. Fruit trees will be the protagonists (apples, peaches, plums...) but there will also be other kinds of trees: trees, shrubs, small fruits and permanent plants.
Audrey Hoc and Aimar Rodríguez, members of the Oma association, are dedicated to organizing the festival of the Tree and are also producers of plants. It highlights the importance of buying local nurseries: "In our seminary we not only produce native varieties, but with climate change it is interesting to introduce varieties from other areas, because it is getting hotter and we have less moisture... However, even in the case of imported varieties, vaccinal mothers or graft patterns or feet will be adapted to the local climate, not to the outside, so these plants are adapted for cultivation".
The poster below shows a wide selection of specialized seminars that will put a table on the market. In addition, the Eki21 project will sell books on trees, offering interesting multilingual bibliography. And there will also be products derived directly from trees: chestnuts and products made with chestnuts, hazelnuts and hazelnuts, willow baskets... but Hoc defines that "all will be products directly related to trees".
A round table between three experts will be held on 26 November at 17:00 a.m. and half an hour thereafter: Sébastien Cau (manufacturer of edible permaculture designs), Jaime Jiménez (resident in Zuberoa, technician in tree and tree barriers) and Hugues de Failly (who deals with peasants to replenish barriers in the large veins and recover the importance of trees in these landscapes).
The topic to discuss among the three is: "The tree in the village: food and the way out of the climate challenge". In fact, the City of Biriatou has included in its political agenda the issue of food sovereignty and that is why they wanted to work on the role of trees in food sovereignty. On the other hand, Hoc recalled that "trees produce water and, consequently, the tree is one of the solutions to the climate challenge".
Hervé Covès, a highly prestigious agronomist in the French state, will hold a conference on Monday 27 November. It will talk about "the tree and food self-sufficiency."
The organization has ensured that the translation will be instant at tables and conferences, and if it rains, both the fair and the conferences will be held at the hostel.
