The TSJPV estimates the appeal against the designation of origin Álava Vineyards
- The High Court of Justice of the Basque Country (TSJPV) has suspended the appointment of the winemakers of Rioja Alavesa, after endorsing the appeal lodged by the Rioja Governing Council. Thus, they will not be able to register the designation of origin Vineyards of Álava. In any case, the Alavesas wineries have just presented a brand badge with the symbol "A".
The High Court of Justice of the Basque Country (TSJPV) has endorsed the Governing Council of the Designation of Origin of La Rioja and has admitted the appeal against the designation of origin Viñas de Álava.
According to EiTB, more details will be announced next Friday, but the Rioja Alavesa Winery Association, ABRA, has closed the door to the creation of its own brand.
The court has admitted the appeal because, among other things, the Basque media points out that it may be "disconcerting" for consumers, as there could be "wines with two designations of origin" in the same geographical area.
The ABRA warned last September that the Alavesa wine industry is in a "serious crisis" during the harvest in Moreda de Álava. As explained to ARGIA, the president of the association, Itxaso Companion, "for years grapes have been paid to farmers below the minimum established by the institutions".
