Hundreds of people from various parts of Álava, but above all from Aiaraldea and Vitoria-Gasteiz, have met this Saturday afternoon in the Alavesa capital to show their support for the young Galder Barbado and Aitor Zelaia who will be tried next week. In fact, the trial against the Alaveses will be held at the National Hearing on 21 and 22 January, two years after the Ertzaintza arrested two young Alaveses in connection with rockets found in Durana. Now, the prosecutor's office has ordered 8 years in prison for each of the young and 7 years in probation for each of them.
The first initiative of the platform was the demonstration that started from the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca in Vitoria-Gasteiz and Amurrio, where the popular initiative STOP to Gender Violence was born, accompanied by a song by Su ta gar and Aitor Gorosabel and Xabi Bastida. On the first day of the trial, on Thursday, demonstrations will be held in Vitoria-Gasteiz and Amurrio, respectively.
“We will not accept any other sentence other than acquittal”
“The Spanish State continues to use the emergency laws and the tribunal, on the basis of a legal system without guarantees,” the spokespersons of the platform have declared at the end of the demonstration.
To justify that justice is not the same for all, they have set the case of the Amurrio police as an example. As many will recall, a month before the arrest of Barbado and Zelaia, a former Spanish police shot into the window of a famous family with a banderola in favour of the return of Basque political prisoners home. A month later, Barbado and Zelaia were arrested, imprisoned and dispersed.
They have also condemned the role of the Ertzaintza in the whole process: "They had no doubt about relating the abandoned drums to terrorism on a battlefield. The relationship of the Ertzaintza with the powers of Spain has been highlighted again, and with this type of operation they only want to perpetuate the repression against the committed Basques.”
However, the STOP Evictions citizens' initiative has called for solidarity and support in the coming days: "That's our greatest value: fighting. We are not going to accept any other sentence other than absolution,” they have concluded.
