Angela Davis has declared that she has been stunned in her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, United States. A few months ago, he was informed that the Birmingham Institute for Civil Rights was going to award him a human rights prize. Two Fridays ago, however, you were told that, because of your opinion of Israel, you will not be given the prize in the end. The speech he planned to make for that day has also been suspended.
It was not initially explained why the members of the Institute were retracted. The note read: "Unfortunately, it does not meet all the requirements that have served as the basis for the prize," he added.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Davis states that he is "aware of the long-standing support he has shown for justice in Palestine." It particularly denounces the rejection of the prize for this reason:
"It is absolutely absurd, given that a great international movement secured my freedom – and saved my life. I have devoted much of my activism to international solidarity and, above all, to linking conflicts in other parts of the world to American grass-roots movements against police abuse, to the complex prison industry, and more broadly, to racism."
Days later, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin acknowledged that there were complaints from "the local Jewish community and some of its allies."
In the midst of this controversy, Davis has called for solidarity with the political prisoners in Palestine, Euskal Herria, Catalonia and India. What it says:
"I defend Palestinian political prisoners, as well as support for Basque, Catalan, Indian and other political prisoners in the world in general. I've shown my opposition to many of the policies and practices of the State of Israel, and I do the same with the support of the United States. United States the Israeli occupation of Palestine, as well as other discriminatory US laws."
“Saihestu egingo dira giza eskubideen, ordenamendu juridikoaren eta espetxeetako tratamendu psikosozialaren aurkako balioak eta jarrerak babestea, justifikatzea eta goratzea ekar dezaketen adierazpenak”, dio, besteak beste, agiriak. Azaroan Eusko Jaurlaritzako... [+]
Asteazken eguerdian berreskuratu du askatasuna astigartarrak, zigorra osorik beteta. Espainiako Auzitegi Nazionalak otsailean inputatu zuen ETAren zuzendaritzako ustezko beste lau kiderekin batera, Gregorio Ordoñezen hilketa leporatuta.
Martxoaren 13an lau urte bete dira Fran Balda arbizuarra istripuz hil zela. Preso, iheslari eta deportatuen etxeratzearen alde egin zuen lan, eta haren bost kidek idatzi diote gutun hau.
Frantziako Poliziak 2002an atxilotu zuen zumarragarra, eta 30 urteko zigorra betetzen ari da. Sare Herritarrak mobilizazioa deitu du datorren ostiralerako, Urretxuko Potros Plazan.
Iratxeren Bidasoaldeko Lagunak ekimenak deituta, dozenaka lagun kalera atera ziren atzo Iratxe Sorzabal preso politiko irundarraren absoluzioa eskatzeko eta behingoz etxera ekartzeko, torturak salatzeaz gain.
Sare Herritarrak antolatuta, pasa den urtarrilaren 11n Bilboko kaleak bete zituen manifestazio jendetsuaren ondoren, berriz sortu da eztabaida, euskal presoei salbuespen legeriarik aplikatzen ote zaion. Gure iritzia azaltzen saiatuko gara.
