The Society of Sciences Aranzadi has found in the cemetery of the town the remains of Miguel Joaquín Eleizegi, the largest of Altzo, on Saturday afternoon. Pilar Unsain Eleizegi was the first to know the news. Unsain received a call from the anthropologist Paco Etxebarria asking him to approach the cemetery. The mayor of the town reported that the remains had been located.
A group of 15 people from the Society of Sciences Aranzadi had been working since 12 August on excavations from the Altzo cemetery, headed by Paco Etxeberria and Lurdes Errasti.
Miguel Joaquín Eleizegi was a 19th-century Gipuzkoan giant. According to the testimonies of the time, Elizegi was about 2.42 meters high. She was an international player before Elizabeth II of Spain and Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, among others. He died of an illness in 1861.
Legends were spread around the location of their remains. There were two big hypotheses around the giant: the first, that the bones were buried in the same town; and the second, that someone had stolen the remains for research. Apparently, the truth is the least hidden mystery: the remains have never moved from Altzo.
This Monday, together with experts from Aranzadi, the descendants of Eleizegi will show the media what they have found in the small cemetery next to the church.
