The National Hearing considers that the Civil Guard lieutenant in the Altsasu case is not a victim of terrorism
- The decision is based on a judgment of the National Court, which states that the resolution condemning the young people of Alsasua did not mention terrorism, and therefore neither the Administration nor the National Court can recognise compensation for the victims of terrorism.
The events occurred in October 2016 and in 2017 the lieutenant asked the Ministry of the Interior to accept the compensation to the victims of terrorism granted to them. The answer came in 2019, following the ruling that overturned the conviction of the young people of Alsasua given by the State High Court of Justice. The sentence did not contain the word terrorism and, therefore, there was no such compensation. The lieutenant's partner who had been assaulted in those street incidents had asked for equal compensation and had also been denied.
The National Court considers that the condemnation of the young people of Alsasua was based on "an attack on authority, damage to people, public disorder and threats" and not on terrorism. It is curious, because the investigation of the case that had been carried out months earlier by this court was based on a terrorist attack, and the lieutenant used that handle to make that request for compensation. The answer has been clear: “Compensation for terrorism cannot be received if there is no crime of terrorism.” The journalist Enrique Conde has been in charge of publicizing the news in the News Journal.
