Open a dossier of penalties to 36 real estate agencies in Bilbao for increasing the rent price
- The Basque Competition Authority investigates a cartel of 36 real estate companies in Bilbao for "fixing" rent prices and acting against competition.
The Basque Competition Authority itself, under the Department of Economy and Finance of the Basque Government, has announced the opening of a dossier of penalties. In his opinion, "in a market that particularly affects a vulnerable group, that is the people who need housing", several real estate companies have found "rational signs" of a possible violation of the Competition Defense Act. According to the newspaper El Correo, there would be at least 36 companies and all of them are based in the Basque capital.
Apparently, these companies have "fixed" the rental price of housing and other conditions with a possible agreement, by creating a cartel on it. In recent years, the sharp increase in rent has directly affected the crisis of the right to decent housing.
The Basque Government has, in any case, pointed out that the opening of the dossier "does not affect the outcome of the investigation" and will now have a maximum period of 18 months for an investigation directorate and the Basque Competition Council to issue the resolution.
However, some companies have made progress and are willing to make a number of commitments in order to avoid penalties and liability, the Basque Competition Authority reports.
