Scottish justice declares innocent Alex Salmond
- On charges such as attempted rape and sexual assault, the former Scottish Prime Minister had thirteen cases of violence against nine women in court. A tenth woman also filed the complaint, but the Prosecutor’s Office rejected it. Now the Edinburgh Supreme Court (TS) has declared the three defendants innocence.
The allegations occurred between 2008 and 2014, during the years when he was the leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) in the Upper Chamber. Salmond declared himself innocent from the outset, and a popular jury, made up of fifteen people, was right for him. He said that he was not the author of the twelve sexual assaults charged against him and that they cannot prove the thirteenth.
Salmond himself acknowledged having had sexual relations with three of the complainants, always with the consent of the two. However, he has admitted that he has to "take more care" of people's personal space and has said that some accusations were "innocent things that became sexual crimes."
Salmond has denounced that the accusations have been carried out with "a political objective" and that they have been "exaggerated". His defense team has denounced that one of Salmond's whistleblowers has tried to contact the other whistleblowers, which causes "bad smells." He added that his client has not always behaved well and that he can be “many times a better man”, but that he has not sexually assaulted anyone.
For his part, the plaintiffs' lawyer, Alex Prentic, has attacked Salmond, considered "an insult." "This is not a trial of political conspiracy, but of a man who exercised his political power with impunity to satisfy his sexual desires," said the president of the Generalitat.
Salmond thanked the Scots for their support for their old allies as soon as the court decision was known and asked them to focus all their attention on the coronavirus.
