The fourth meeting between the management and the workers of Tubacex took place on Wednesday. As planned, no agreement was reached. The unions advanced in the massive mobilisation last Thursday that they saw no conditions for negotiation, as the only options the company has put on the table are wage reduction or dismissal.
ELA summarised in a communiqué the events that took place during the meeting. “We do not believe that the situation in Tubacex is worthy of demanding this kind of effort from the workers,” the union has denounced and denounced that the management has not presented “guarantees, reversibility or industrial plans” for the future. “We don’t think it’s serious, and that’s why we’ve refused to negotiate something directed by themselves.”
Managers did not attend the meeting alone. Together with them, a member of the PWC consultancy confirmed that the future of the Tubacex market was crude. “It is curious, we have been told that it will be this company that will complete the technical report if it ends in a Employment Regulation Dossier. Total objectivity! And they're not ashamed to say that they knew all this, that it's not a COVID-19 thing, when we all know that Esmoris (Tubacex consultant) recently said that they have the goal of breaking records and positioning themselves well in the market. They are all contradictions,” ELA said.
According to the union, Tubacex’s management referred to two other issues: that the factories of the region are not profitable and that the future of oil is very difficult, because now it is committed to renewable energies. Faced with this, the union has put on the table several “truths”: that the multinational has gained many millions in recent years, that it has in the box EUR 100 million, that it has the capacity to pay the debt and that it has enough workload to occupy temporary workers and 150 workers.
In this sense, the members of ELA have demanded an industrial plan for the management to account for its intentions regarding the plants of the region, “if not, we think everything is a speculative movement”. They also reiterated their gratitude to the citizens of the region for their support for the mobilization of last Thursday: “We continue to work to give visibility to our problem.”
